Sometimes, quitting necessary for sanity
Everyone has to do things that they don't like sometimes. One of those things is quitting a job.
I told myself that I would never do that, no matter what. I hate quitting things. But the time has finally come for that. I've been working for Instructional Technology and Distance Education (now Faculty Center for Teaching with Technology) on campus for nearly a year and a half now, but my time there has come to an end, and today I spent my last day as a student worker there.
I finally had to admit to myself that I just did not have the time to work two jobs, carry a full load of coursework, and still complete everything that needed to be completed for my schooling. I've always told myself that I can do anything, but I've finally found my limit.
Everyone has their breaking point, and at some point or another you realize that the stress isn't worth the extra income, no matter how badly you need it, and while it's nice to finally realize just how far I can bend before I break, I'm also sad to be leaving a place I've become so comfortable with.
Before this job, I had never worked a ‘real' job before; real being a job that lasted longer than a summer. I had the privilege of not having to work a job while in high school, partially because of my lack of time with marching band and partially because I just never really thought about it. I had worked a couple summer jobs for friends of the family, ranging from working as a soda jerk at an antique store to doing inventory at an agricultural manufacturing company.
However, while I'm sad to be leaving this wonderful job, I'm also excited to see what will be thrown my way next. I can finally focus one hundred percent on my career with some ‘free' time on my hands, if you can call it that.
Don't wear yourselves out past your breaking point. As the end of the semester draws nearer with each passing day, I know that a lot of us can feel ourselves stretching more and more.
Believe me when I say that there comes a point when the cons outweigh the pros. When that time comes, you'll know. And while quitting my job was one of the hardest decisions I've had to make in a long time, it's also made me grow up a little bit more.
Money isn't everything; sometimes we need our sanity more.
